ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAMS

The Academic Achievement Programs (AAP) is a student services department, which promotes academic excellence among UC Berkeley undergraduates. AAP works in partnership with students, faculty, and professional staff to provide scholarly activities and comprehensive academic support services. AAP students represent a diverse group of scholars and leaders. Our office serves student from low-income backgrounds, students whose parents did not graduate from college, and/or students from underrepresented groups.

One of AAP’s primary goals is to provide academic support services to prepare students to go beyond their undergraduate degree and continue on to pursue advanced degrees. AAP services include research fellowships with faculty and courses for credit in coordination with academic departments. AAP provide counseling, advising, tutoring, and academic workshops and seminars, which are essential components to student success. AAP also sponsors a national research symposium, in which selected scholars present their research. Scholars also publish their work in an AAP sponsored research journal. These activities give students the opportunity to participate in Berkeley’s tradition of research excellence.

 AAP operates within the Division of Undergraduate Education and is funded by grants, private donors, and University support.

Student Support Services Scholars Academy

            Student Support Services (SSS) Scholars Academy activities include courses for academic credit, writing and learning skills workshops, crisis and personal counseling, and advising services. This program assists lower division and upper division students. Within SSS, a smaller cohort of first and second-year undergraduates receives a small amount of Pell grant funds to offset their student loans.

McNair Scholars Program

            The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program prepares selected Berkeley undergraduates for graduate study at the doctoral level. Each year, 20-30 McNair Scholars have the opportunity to develop close relationships with faculty mentor to publish their research in the Berkeley McNair Journal, to present their research findings at a national symposium, and to receive assistance to ensure admission to graduate programs. Scholars participate in both academic year and summer activities and receive a stipend for their summer research.

Miller Scholars Program

The George A. Miller Scholars Program is designed to provide ten first-generation and low-income community college transfer students with a two-year scholarship and a research/community service stipend. Scholars are selected based upon number of criteria, including demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to community service. During the academic year, George A Miller Scholars receive training and support for the design of a faculty-mentor summer project involving either original or community service project.
