Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program Application Guidelines

The 2014 McNair Application is now closed, and was due Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

Late final materials might still be considered if emailed immediately to Eli Barbosa:

To be eligible for the McNair Scholars Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be UC Berkeley undergraduate student in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 and above
  • Come form a low-income household where neither parent has obtained a bachelors degree and/or be a member of an underrepresented group in higher education (i.e. Native American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic or African American)
  • Have accumulated a minimum of 60 credits by the end of the Fall semester 2014
  • Must be enrolled at UC Berkeley during Spring 2015
  • Be interested in obtaining a doctoral degree from a major university in the United States. (The McNair Scholars Program is strictly for students who are committed to pursing a Ph.D. degree. Students interested in medical, legal, or other professional degrees should not apply who go on to pursue an M.D., a J.D., D.D.S., and other Master’s or professional degrees may be required to repay the McNair award.)

Each year, the selection committee actively seeks and selects students interested in pursuing doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) who have proven records of academic excellence and a commitment to education.

McNair Scholars are expected to attend a mandatory seminar every Wednesday starting in January and ending in May.  We also expect scholars to be available during the summer of 2054 to conduct their research and attend a weekly seminar.  Scholars are expected to complete their research project by the end of July 2015, submit a written report to both their mentor and the McNair program by the end of July, and present their finding at the National McNair Symposium at UC Berkeley the first week of August.  We also expect all students to complete a strong graduate school application by the end of the Fall semester 2015 and to apply to at least one graduate school program in the Fall semester 2015.

The 2014 application deadline was Tuesday, October 7 at 3:00 pm.
